Flights, visas and arrival
Applying for a visa, trekking and climbing permits, airport pick-up and when to arrive.

From your visa to your first night in Pakistan
Visas
Most visitors apply online through the Government of Pakistan’s official visa system. Rules and fees depend on your nationality, so check the official site rather than third-party agents, and apply well ahead of travel.
Permits
Treks in restricted zones and climbs of peaks above 6,000 m need government permits, which take time — for expeditions, apply around three months ahead. We handle permit applications for our programs; see expedition logistics.
International flights
International flights arrive at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Most of our trips start in Islamabad, the closest gateway to the north. Overland, the Khunjerab Pass links Pakistan with China in summer. More in About Pakistan.
Arrival and pick-up
We can meet you at Islamabad airport and take you to your hotel — see airport meet & greet.
Arrive at least a day before any onward flight north, so a delayed international arrival does not cost you the connection — and keep a spare day at the end in case northern flights are grounded by weather.
Plan for weather on the way north
Flights to Gilgit and Skardu save a long drive but only operate in clear weather, and cancellations are common. On our treks a grounded flight means we continue by road instead, which takes longer — so leave room in your plans for a delay.
Typical times
- Islamabad → Gilgit or Skardu: about 1 hour by air
- Islamabad → Gilgit: usually two days by road
- Peshawar → Chitral: about 50 minutes by air
