Overview

The broad peak of the Baltoro

Broad Peak was first climbed in 1957 by an Austrian team of four, including Hermann Buhl and Kurt Diemberger, without oxygen or porters above base camp. The normal route up the west spur is less technical than K-2’s, which makes it a popular first Karakoram 8,000 m peak — but the summit ridge is long and the final traverse to the main summit catches many climbers out.

Base camp lies on the moraine of the Godwin-Austen glacier, an hour or two from K-2 Base Camp, so some teams combine the two peaks in one season.
